Executive functioning has become an umbrella term for a range of mental skills, including working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. These skills are crucial for managing daily tasks, from simple routines to complex problem-solving.
This series focuses on the key mental skills that help you plan, focus, and manage tasks, offering practical solutions to navigate challenges along the way.
In our last post, we covered organisational skills, giving you a look at one part of executive functioning. But that’s just the beginning. We will dive deeper into this critical topic, focusing on another key player: working memory.
Understanding Working Memory: How This Vital Function Supports Learning and Daily Tasks
The definition of working memory is still debated, with its characteristics varying depending on the area of study. Generally, working memory enables individuals to retain and process information, even when distractions are present. Whether you’re following a recipe, solving a tricky problem, or juggling multiple tasks, working memory is right there, making sure everything stays on track.
Curious to learn more? In our next two blogs, we’ll explore how this essential cognitive skill impacts both learning and daily tasks through the experiences of two students: Neithan and Sophie (names changed for privacy). Neithan’s story will highlight strategies for enhancing overall well-being, while Sophie’s will provide practical steps for teaching problem-solving skills and applying knowledge in new contexts.
Our coaching approach with Neithan has centred on building his self-belief, guiding him through projects, and helping him develop the confidence and resilience needed for long-term success. 15-year-old Sophie, who has received a diagnosis of working memory deficiency, struggled with unfamiliar tasks and felt overwhelmed. By breaking down complex problems, experimenting with strategies, and encouraging active learning, we’ve empowered Sophie to apply her knowledge in new situations and tackle challenges with growing confidence.
Keep an eye out for these upcoming blogs in the new academic year. They’ll not only offer interesting insights for professionals but also provide strategies to help students develop their reasoning, problem-solving, and ability to learn new skills.
