Parents often ask me:
“I don’t want my child to fall behind. How can you help them stay on track?”
Many children I work with experience Emotion-Based School Avoidance (EBSA) or have learning differences. They may feel anxious, overwhelmed, or unmotivated by the standard school model, and can benefit from temporary or long-term home-schooling, flexi-schooling, or support with executive functioning skills.
For us, the aim isn’t to “catch up” in the conventional sense. It’s to spark curiosity and rebuild confidence so that learning becomes something they want to pursue again. Once they regain that spark, they naturally progress. When a child can return to school — or feels comfortable with their own learning — reintroducing the wider curriculum, supported by the study skills we’ve built together, often happens faster than expected.
The concept of ‘falling behind’ assumes a single path for everyone, and those who don’t fit that external model must ‘catch up’. In a world full of comparison, it’s easy to lose sight of our own pace.
At Out of the Box Teaching, we believe that genuine progress begins when we meet children exactly where they are — even if that’s anxious, uncertain, or disconnected from learning. From there, we move forward gently, with care and intention.
We teach the foundations of learning first — the part that takes the longest to establish, yet can fail if not secure. Once that foundation is strong, new concepts can be added confidently, with each one building on the last.
How We Work
Our approach integrates proven time-tested teaching practices with creative, student-led methods, grounded in psychology and real-world experience.
Our Core Principles
- Creativity & Confidence – Learning through art, storytelling, and projects that help children feel safe, seen, and inspired.
- Critical Thinking – Encouraging curiosity: Why? How? What if?
- Personalised Learning – Tailoring to each child’s pace and strengths, nurturing trust and independence.
- Family Balance – Flexible sessions that fit around family life and help restore calm back to the home.
- Enjoyment with Results – Engaging methods and meaningful guidance help every learner progress.
Learning Pathways
We offer flexible, interest-led programmes that combine curiosity with structure:
KS2 (typically ages 9–11, but flexible) – Revisiting English and Maths while developing creative and critical thinking. Ideal for building confidence or preparing for the 11+.
KS3 (typically ages 11–14, flexible to suit the learner) – Themed projects linking Psychology, Philosophy, History, Art, English, and Maths (you can create your own combination). Ideal for students seeking an engaging way to explore the world while building study skills and confidence for future GCSE preparation.
KS4 (typically ages 14–16, with flexibility for older or younger learners) – A dedicated pathway for home-schooled learners, those with learning differences, or anyone who has missed formal education. Designed to support progress towards GCSE English and Maths — and other subjects — with a proven structure and personalised support.
Helping Children Progress — Their Way
At Out of the Box Teaching, we don’t just help children “keep up.”
We ask: “How do we help them move forward in a way that’s truly their own?”
