Home Schooling in the UK and Bristol

Home Schooling in the UK and Bristol

Choosing to home school your child isn’t a decision you make lightly, and it will often be one of the biggest family decisions you ever make. Why you choose to homeschool your child is personal to you, but the common reason parents decide to embark on this journey is almost always the same: to give your child the best possible chance of a great education.

Dedicated home-schooling parents prefer to use the term ‘home educate’, because there is no school at home, but ‘home schooling’ will be used in this article interchangeably.

If you’ve always known you would home school your child, you have probably been carrying out your research over time and have been able to gather all, if not most of the information you need. However, if it’s something you’re just starting to consider without previous plans to home school, it can be a daunting process. Inevitably doubts can creep in about whether you’re able to do it all and many parents start to weigh up the pros and cons of homeschooling.

A previous client, Sally, had been considering homeschooling her daughter for several months but trying to find all the information she needed was extremely overwhelming and with so much information available on the internet, she found she was overloaded with different opinions and advice.

Talking to tutors, teachers, other parents and various organisations, Sally found everyone to be extremely helpful and supportive but again, there was no unified approach. She realised she would have to find the solution and interpret the information herself.

Parents choosing to homeschool in the UK consider it as a long term solution and are ready to commit a large amount of their time. However, every parent has a unique situation so the number of hours that can be dedicated will vary.

Whilst some parents are looking for purely academic support, others are looking for a coaching role combined with the academic side, especially those with children who have poor self-esteem and are struggling with more than purely academic skills. Making the right choice for your child is clearly the priority but here we look at how Out of the Box Teaching can help:

Out of the Box Teaching provides homeschooling in Bristol and offers homeschooling online in the UK.

The roles can include:

  • Creating an interest-led learning plan
  • Adapting and tailoring the curriculum material for home schooling
  • Educational guidance and training for parents
  • Teaching directly, according to the agreed plan (at home or via skype)
  • Incorporation of confidence and motivational sessions
  • Delivering working memory improvement sessions

When Sally got in contact with us, she was looking for a combination of Maths and English skills but also support as her daughter had low self-image as a student and had difficulty concentrating. Through a bespoke, tailored programme called Building Blocks for Effective Learning, we worked with her daughter to improve her self-image and combined the coaching with the Maths and English Confidence package. At the end of our work together, Sally shared that not only did the programmes help her daughter, but she has grown as well in the process.

We understand that the importance placed upon the UK curriculum is different to everyone. So, whether you’re looking to follow the traditional curriculum, or you would prefer a tailor made programme, we always make sure we create bespoke programmes that are tailored to your child’s personal, specific needs and learning style.

Our promise to you:

Out of the Box Teaching also offers three established educational programmes: Maths and English Confidence Package, Building Blocks for Effective Learning and Working Memory Programme, which can be incorporated in the curriculum.

We specialise in working with neurodiverse children and coaching is an important part of the work we do.

Our tutors actively participate in the delivery of homeschooling sessions. They can guide you to become independent educators, whereby they gradually step back to take a role of a coordinator. This doesn’t have to be set in stone, our tutors are flexible to ensure you get the support you require.

The main goal is to work together to awaken and nurture the child’s desire to learn and explore the world.
